Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid was named the Most Valuable Player in the National Hockey League on Wednesday after the 20-year-old’s points-scoring exploits helped carry his team into the post-season. Crosby and nine-time winner Wayne Gretzky were both 19 when they picked up the award for the first time. “It’s amazing to receive this from Wayne, the greatest player of all-time,” McDavid said when presented the award by ‘The Great One’ at a post-season presentation ceremony at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In his second season in the NHL, McDavid was the league’s top scorer with 100 points (30 goals and 70 assists) in 82 games as Edmonton returned to the playoffs for the first time in 11 seasons. “I’m so proud to play in Edmonton, so proud...

U.S. judge urged to halt Iraqi deportations due to persecution fears

2017-06-21

By Steve Friess and Mica Rosenberg | DETROIT/NEW YORK A U.S. judge heard arguments on Wednesday to halt the deportations of around 100 Iraqis arrested by immigration authorities in the Detroit area because many belong to minorities and could face torture or religious persecution in their homeland. In a coordinated sweep in recent weeks, immigration authorities moved to detain Iraqi immigrants around the country who had final deportation orders and convictions for serious crimes. The roundup followed Iraq’s agreement to accept deportees, as part of a deal that removed the country from President Donald Trump’s temporary travel ban signed in March. Some of those affected came to the United States as children and committed their crimes decades ago, but they had been allowed to stay because Iraq previously declined to...

U.S. arrests nearly 200 Iraqis in deportation sweep

2017-06-14

U.S. immigration authorities have arrested and moved to deport 199 Iraqi immigrants, mostly from the Detroit area, in the last three weeks after Iraq agreed to accept deportees as part of a deal removing it from President Donald Trump’s travel ban, officials said on Wednesday. In the Detroit area, 114 Iraqi nationals were arrested over the weekend, and 85 throughout the rest of the country over the past several weeks, Gillian Christensen, a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman, said in a statement. The actions came as part of the Trump administration’s push to increase immigration enforcement and make countries, which have resisted in the past, take back nationals ordered deported from the United States. The crackdown on Iraqi immigrants followed the U.S. government’s decision to drop Iraq from a list of Muslim-majority nations targeted by a revised version of Trump’s temporary travel ban issued in March. Penguins strike late to repeat as Stanley Cup champs

Patric Hornqvist’s late goal followed by an empty-netter from Carl Hagelin lifted the Pittsburgh Penguins to a thrilling 2-0 Stanley Cup-clinching victory over the Nashville Predators on Sunday. With the victory, the Penguins clinched the best-of-seven championship 4-2 to win the franchise’s fifth Stanley Cup. They also became the NHL’s first repeat champion since Detroit did it 19 years ago. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs, said his team had worked hard to keep improving with each game. “All playoffs long we got better as each series went on,” he added. “We tried to do that this series and I thought we did a good job of that.” Hornqvist scored the game-winning goal with only 95 seconds left when he batted a puck that had bounced off the end boards out of mid air, off the net and off goaltender Pekka Rinne’s back and into the goal.
